When I first discovered The Morcyth Saga by Brian S Pratt, I was instantly drawn into an enchanting world filled with magic, peril, and unforgettable characters. This series kicks off with three thrilling books that artfully blend essential fantasy elements. In this blog post, I will guide you through the exciting journey of these initial installments, highlighting key themes, memorable characters, and why this saga should not be missed by any fantasy lover.
My First Experience
I had originally read the first book, The Unsuspecting Mage, somewhere around 2011. My boyfriend had just bought this amazing thing from Barnes and Noble called a Nook! Yes, I know, we all know what an E-Reader is now, but at the time, this was state of the art and the best gift ever.
Every week, the Nook offered an E-Book for free, and this book called The Unsuspecting Mage was one of them. As a fan of fantasy, I figured it wouldn't hurt to check it out. It was free, after all. What did I have to lose?
I devoured this book. Something about it reminded me of Tolkien, while still having enough originality to keep me engaged. At the time, I did see there was another book in the series, but I didn't have the money to purchase it. I ended up moving on to other books and honestly forgot about this book for a while.
Here it is, 2025, and for some reason, that book kept rolling around in my head. I decided to see if my Kobo had it, and sure enough... there it was! I reread the first book since it had been so long since my first read-through, and quickly moved on to the second and third books. While I am still reading the third book, I wanted to share my thoughts so far.
The Morcyth Saga: An Overview
The Morcyth Saga is a fantasy series that follows the adventures of James, a young man from our world, pulled into a world of magic and turmoil. Set in a richly detailed universe populated by diverse peoples, each with unique cultures, Brian S. Pratt excels in creating a backdrop that is both vast and immersive.
The first three books—Book One: The Unsuspecting Mage, Book Two: Fires of Prophecy, and Book Three: Warrior priest of Dmon-Li—lay the foundation for James's journey and the various trials he must face. Each installment builds on the previous one brilliantly, introducing new characters, conflicts, and magic that elevate the plot.
Book One: The Unsuspecting Mage
It began when James, a young man about to graduate from high school, got a suggestion from his grandfather to look into a job advertisement:
“Magic! Real Magic! Ever wanted to learn? We require someone with intelligence and a disciplined mind. Those well versed in fantasy novels and role playing games a plus. May need to travel.”
It seemed like the ideal position for an experienced role-player and enthusiastic fantasy reader. James never imagined he would be transported to another realm, entirely separated from his friends and family. Upon arriving in a meadow within a forest, he was met by a creature that wasn't... human? He was then told three things:
Magic works here… Don’t try to go home… Get to the village of Trendle…
Then the creature disappeared. Which direction was Trendle? Where was he? These were just some of the questions that needed answers. Relying solely on his intelligence and the knowledge he had gained from countless books and dungeon adventures, he set out merely trying to stay alive. He quickly realized that a single error or lapse in judgment could result in death.
After he sets off on his journey, he meets many people, friends and foes, and quickly gains the knowledge that he holds power he himself can't understand.
He eventually encounters Miko, a clever street kid who quickly becomes his friend and companion. Unbeknownst to him, the resilience of this child from the streets of Bearn—resilience that would be continuously tested as they navigated numerous battles, explored hidden underground passages, and faced the might of an Empire—would be invaluable in the challenges ahead.
They continue their adventure toward The City of Light, encountering many challenges along the way. Both are in search of answers to questions they don't fully understand, and neither is prepared for what awaits them.

Book Two: Fires of Prophecy
When the City of Light fell to the Empire, James watched helplessly as his friend Miko was taken by soldiers. Despite the chaos, he vowed, "I will find you." Unaware of the dangers ahead, James embarked on a perilous journey into the Empire to rescue Miko. Joined by a new group of allies, some with unique skills, they disguised themselves as a merchants from Cardri, blending into the Empire's world with a caravan of goods.
As he traveled, James faced challenges and opportunities, gathering information about Miko while maintaining his cover. He met resistance groups opposing the Empire, forming crucial alliances. Despite constant danger, James's resolve grew stronger, fueled by hope and the belief that together they could challenge the tyranny.
From the City of Light to Korazan's slave markets and the Empire's capital, James tirelessly searched for Miko, determined to save him from his fate.
Book Three: Warrior Preist of Dmon-Li
When James blew up the Iron Mines at Sorna in a huge volcanic explosion to free Miko, it triggered massive tsunamis that wreaked havoc on the Empire's coastline. This caught the eye of some mighty opponents in the Empire.
Now, with a warrior priest of Dmon-Li hot on their trail, James has to get everyone safely out of the Empire and into the kingdom of Cardri. After a disastrous sea journey leaves them stuck on the shores of a thick swamp full of cannibals and dangerous creatures, they have to make their way north to escape the Empire's clutches.
In The Warrior Priest of Dmon-Li, James is tested to his physical and mental limits. Alongside Miko and Jiron, he encounters many challenges in both combat and strategy. Their survival hinges on his capacity to overcome these hurdles.

Final Thoughts on An Engaging Fantasy Journey
The first three books of The Morcyth Saga by Brian S Pratt serve as a fantastic introduction to an intricately woven fantasy world brimming with adventure, magic, and relatable characters. James' journey resonates with me as it explores themes of friendship, sacrifice, and identity.
Whether you are a lifelong fantasy reader or just stepping into the genre, these books provide something for everyone. The combination of action, character development, and ethical challenges creates a narrative that keeps you engaged while making you think.
I should mention that you might encounter typos here and there. This is the work of an independent author, so some errors have slipped through. Despite this, there were only a few instances where I was pulled out of the story.
As previously mentioned, Pratt's writing style somewhat resembles Tolkien's, at least from my perspective. This is due to his exceptional world-building, comparable to the masters of the genre. Just as Tolkien immerses you in Middle Earth, Pratt vividly brings his own world to life. Likewise, his characters have a touch of Tolkien's influence. However, unlike Tolkien, who presents clear-cut heroes and villains, Pratt keeps you questioning the trustworthiness of characters, often surprising you with their true nature.
If you haven't started this exciting adventure yet, I highly suggest diving into The Morcyth Saga. You certainly won't be disappointed! I'm eagerly looking forward to the next four myself.
